We are in the United States. Welcome to the Naval Academy! There are many ways to enjoy your time in the yard. But first, make sure you are familiar with the access requirements to get to the yard. Anyone 18 years of age or older must present a driver's license or a valid unissued government identification card and another acceptable form of identification such as an SSN card, student ID, birth certificate, or voter registration card. Original, unexpired passports will be issued in lieu of the previously mentioned forms of ID and are required for non-citizen visitors.

(Effective May 2025) Please note that as a result of the REAL ID Act, some state/territory IDs are not sufficient for access to the Academy. Please check the current state/territory status to see if your state or territory ID is in compliance with the REAL ID Act. Driver's licenses and state IDs from non-compliant states must be accompanied by another acceptable form of identification (SSN card, certified copy of birth certificate, US citizen ID card, etc.). Non-citizen visitors must present an original passport for entry.

The Naval Academy is one of my favorite venues, as I had the honor of having my wedding in the Main Chapel as my husband is an alumnus. I could not wish for a better place. Below are some of my favorite things to look for:
Built in 1908, the main chapel is a magnificent architectural structure steeped in history, and is open to the public (except for weddings and other special events). If you really want to experience the culture of the Naval Academy, the chapel's Sunday services are also open to the public.

This extraordinary building is amazing. You will see the beautiful stained glass windows that describe the history of the navy. There is also the main organ console, one of the largest in the world. The main chapel has a capacity of 2,500 seats. On my wedding day, as I walked down the long aisle to the mansion with my husband. , I was happy. With the organ playing, afternoon light streaming through the dome windows, and our family and friends in attendance, the setting could not have been more perfect. It was one of the best days of my life. It is beautiful and a definite must see when visiting the academy.
"I haven't started fighting yet!" John Paul Jones' famous response to a demand for surrender by the British Army during the American Revolution. Jones was buried in a crypt below, in 1913, a century after his death. The main chapel. In the crypt, you will find his 21-ton sarcophagus, supported by bronze dolphins and surrounded by black and white marble columns.
The exhibit also includes important historical items such as a gold medal awarded by Congress in 1787 and his commission as captain, signed by John Hancock. This is a wonderful opportunity to visit and learn about the "Father of the American Navy."
Located in Bancroft Hall, it is the largest academic dormitory group in the United States. Bancroft Hall houses more than 4,000 midshipmen. It has 1,700 rooms, nearly five thousand corridors, and 33 acres of floor space. It's just one dorm, huh? However, since most of Bancroft Hall is off limits to the public, you can visit Memorial Hall, which is located inside.

The Hall honors all Academy alumni who have died in combat or military action in service to our country. It is a magnificent hall, richly decorated, and a wonderful backdrop for photos.
It is a wonderful experience for tourists to see. Every weekday afternoon (weather permitting), the brigade of more than 4,000 midshipmen gathers in Tecumseh Court outside Bancroft Hall for roll call before lunch. They are dressed in their plain uniforms and separated into battalions. During roll call, a midshipman in each battalion declares his battalion number and "all present and accounting for them." The Naval Academy band played the Naval Academy battle song, "Anchor's Awe" and the Navy hymn "The Halls of Montezuma" as the brigade marched into Bancroft Hall in perfect unison. The whole ceremony takes a little more than eight minutes. This show always gives me goosebumps because it's special. This is definitely my favorite.
Triton Light is a navigational beacon located on the Academy levee where the Severn River meets the waters of Spa Creek and Annapolis City Harbor. The light was named for the submarine USS Triton and the 1945 class was issued.
In 1960 the USS Triton's historic orbit was completed, and the crew provided water samples from the 22 oceans it passed through. The structure contains a globe that holds this precious water.

Not only is Triton Light an important part of the Academy's culture and tradition, but it is still a reliable navigational point in Annapolis Harbor with its glowing green light.

If you prefer, take a self-guided academy tour at your own pace. The US Naval Academy Museum is a wonderful display of artifacts, and the Naval Academy Chapel is a sight to behold with its impressive dome and colorful stained glass windows. Under the chapel, you will find the crypt of the naval hero John Paul Jones, hailed as the father of the US Navy.

The Naval Academy participates in many sporting events in which the public can participate. You will often see Annapolitans in their bright uniforms sporting blue and gold in a sea of midshipmen, all enthusiastically cheering on the navy. From big football games and tailgates at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium to legendary Annapolis Cup croquet matches with neighboring St. John's College (reminiscent of a scene from The Great Gatsby), has something for everyone.
Graduation week, known as Commencement Week, energizes the city just before Memorial Day. The week is filled with fun events like the Herndon Monument climb, where first-year Academy graduates work together to climb the 21-foot tall Lord-Growned Monument, attempting to replace an officer's hat. Top hat. It symbolizes teamwork and perseverance. The Naval Air Show presented by the Blue Angels is an unofficial holiday in Annapolis, as many residents take the day off to see the show. Whether watching on land or sea, the show is not to be missed.
USNA is located in downtown Annapolis and is worth a visit. It is the biggest heartbeat of Annapolis, because it shows the energy and maritime history of our city. For more information on Naval, please visit the USNA website
