Glock Mag Ar9 - For the past three or four months, I've been trying to get out and shoot with strangers at public fields in Michigan or at various indoor ranges. It's easy to shoot on private land with the same type of people. In an effort to break this trend, I recently started shooting at random indoor ranges and talking to people about random firearms. I was amazed when I picked up two AR pistol caliber carbines and people couldn't tell the difference between Colt AR magazines and Glock factory magazines. I get a lot of questions about what they should buy and what is best if they only have the budget to buy one. Let's look at the differences between Glock mags and Colt mags.

Colt AR pattern magazines are among the original stick mags for 9mm ARs on the market. Some original Colt magazines have modified UZI magazines to fit Colt receivers. Here are some of the most popular firearms of the 1980s under MP5 and UZI. Back in the day, the DEA used the Colt 635, which took these 9mm magazines, and the 9mm AR type idea was lost in the 90s and 2000s. With the resurgence of 9mm ARs, various magazines have exploded in popularity. Companies like C-Products and ASC have launched high quality reproductions of classic Colt stick magazines.

Several guns have come out recently that use Colt magazines. Some guns, like the Noveske Space Invader and Type-A 10.5 9mm SPR, have options for Colt magazines straight from the factory. Many people who use Colt pattern magazines often prefer the overall look and performance of stick magazines over other magazines such as Glock mags. The standard capacity of Colt model magazines is 32 rounds. Typically, they cost around $15-20 per mag from things like Gunmag Warehouse or other retailers. There are several manufacturers that make Colt pattern magazines and they are very affordable in most cases.

Honestly, I don't need to say much about Glock mags. They are a universal magazine used by most small to medium AR pistol caliber carbine systems and are everywhere. If you own several different Glocks, it makes perfect sense to build or order a gun that takes the magazines you already own. Glock mags typically range from $28-35 for 33 round magazines, with off-brand magazines being cheaper.

The beauty of Glock magazines is that they are available almost everywhere guns and ammo are sold. You may not always find a Colt 9mm AR magazine, but you will likely find a Glock magazine available. Another advantage is the availability of magazine extensions such as the Taran Tacticals Plus 6 base plate. This gives you about 40 rounds in the weapon compared to the Colt AR mag with 32 rounds. When we look at the total weight of both magazines, the Glock magazines weigh less than the metal bodied Colt mags.

Colt Pattern and Glock magazines have their advantages, and both have a great track record of bulletproof feeding reliability. It's hard to argue when people order Glock pattern ARs if they already have several Glock magazines. This saves money and allows you to use the magazines you already own in several firearms. Trust me, I totally get it and honestly it's a smart move.

For those of you who don't have many Glock magazines, I would seriously consider using Colt pattern magazines. Between the two, I personally prefer the Colt magazines for everyday use. As both are very reliable, I have no hesitation in recommending the magazine style. Personally, I really leave it to the buyer's choice and situation. I love that old style Colt magazines are very common and are becoming popular again. As a result, I can't wait to see what else comes out along the way.
